5 Ways to Stop and Prevent Bad Breath

Garlic then hath power to save from death Bear with it though it maketh unsavory breath,
And scorn not garlic like some that think It only maketh men wink and drink and stink.
             — The Englishman’s Doctor, by Sir John Harrington, 1609

As this verse laments, the major drawback to eating garlic—or other strong-smelling foods like onions or tuna fish—is bad breath. Usually, the smell is transient and can be masked with a good brushing or a mint or stick of gum.

Chronic bad breath or halitosis, on the other hand, is another story. Billions of dollars are spent in this country every year on products promising to get rid of this condition. Yet most of these products, which include alcohol-, peroxide- and baking soda-based mouthwashes, toothpastes and sprays, mask the odor at best and in some cases actually make the problem worse.

But don’t worry. If you’re one of the 40 million Americans who suffer with halitosis, I’ve got a few tips for you that will help you banish bad breath.

  • Gargle with apple cider vinegar

This acidic substance has been used for centuries and is known for eliminating bacteria, especially in the mouth. It has antiseptic properties that help break down plaque and helps digestion when consumed, which may help bad breath caused by indigestion. Plus, ACV has tons of essential minerals that are necessary for health. Either gargle with ACV for 10 seconds, or mix 1 tablespoon in an 8 ounce glass of water anytime you encounter bad breath. This substance may taste nasty and potent, but the effects will have this be your go-to cure.
  • Floss and tongue scraper

Food accumulates in your teeth and decays if it sits there for a long time. Floss every morning a night to rid your mouth of any food. Bacterial plaque and food debris can also accumulate on the back of the tongue. Use a tongue scraper after your floss, morning and night, to help clear up potential causes for bad breath. Oddly enough, mouthwash doesn’t clear up bad breath.
  • Cardamom seeds

One of the most effective remedies against halitosis, and it can be found right in your kitchen. It is an ingredient in some chewing gums, as well. Simply chewing on the seeds eliminates bad odors, or even drinking cardamom tea at the end of a meal.
  • Sip on green tea

This scientifically proven study found that the polyphenols destroy compounds in the mouth that can lead to bad breath, tooth decay and mouth cancer. Oral cavities, oxidative stress and inflammation can be reduced by green tea polyphenols. If green tea wasn’t on your radar before, make sure it is now.
  • Chew lemon or orange

Cut a slice of lemon or orange and chew on it to stimulate the salivary glands. This will freshen your breath and get your glands moving. The acidic content in lemons also prevents the growth of bacteria in your mouth. This can help solve the problem of dry mouth, one of the main causes of bad breath.
